Rebalance of January 29, 2010

Inflation-Linked constituents

Every one of the 28 holdings, with the three deductions that set its weight, both prices, and its contribution to the month. The contributions add to the published return, which is what makes a level checkable rather than something to trust.

Both totals are added up on this page from the rows in the table below, not read from a stored figure, a total computed somewhere you cannot see would prove nothing. The check below compares that sum against the level published on the Inflation-Linked page, fetched separately.

These reconcile. The holdings below sum to +1.370628% against a published month return of +1.370628%, a difference of 6.2e-9 basis points, the published rounding rather than arithmetic. That shows this level is reproducible from these holdings; it is not a check on the prices behind them, since both sides use the same ones.

How each weight is set

Par auctioned, less what Treasury has bought back and retired, less what the Federal Reserve holds, gives the float that is actually investable. The two deductions are applied in that order rather than combined: a buyback destroys the debt, while the Federal Reserve only parks it, so merging them would restore retired par the moment quantitative tightening reversed.

Every holding of the Inflation-Linked index at the January 29, 2010 rebalance, heaviest first, with par and the two deductions, the float, prices, weight and contribution.

Prices are dirty, clean bid plus accrued, from Treasury's own end-of-day file. A security's return includes coupons received during the month, which are held as cash to the next reconstitution rather than reinvested intra-month. A dash in a deduction column means that security has none.

Index levels before September 30, 2026 are back-tested. They were computed after the fact by applying the rules to historical data, which benefits from hindsight in the choice of rules, and an index cannot be invested in directly. Methodology v1.0 takes effect at that rebalance, when levels begin to be struck on the day; the rulebook is identical either way, and the version is published on every row.

A fitted curve is a fit, not a quote. Daily error averages 3.8 basis points across the history and reaches about 20 on the worst days, in December 2008, when the market was genuinely hard to fit one smooth curve to. Every curve page publishes its own fit error rather than burying it.
